Paducah 16, Mayfield 6 -- As all eyes turn to the upcoming Regional Tournament, the Tilghman Tornado squad is hot, hot, hot, peaking at just the right time as witnessed Friday in a 16-6 thumping of Mayfield at Doc Hideg Field.
Coming into Friday's game, Eric Riffe was 7-for-8 this week with 10 runs scored, seven RBIs and four homers. Colbe Crim was 3-for-7 with three runs scored and five RBIs. And Jackson Fristoe was 4-for-9 with five runs scored, five RBIs and a homer. Tilghman went 3-0 against Murray, Trigg County, and Marshall County along the way.
Mayfield took off running in the top of the first, getting one run on a fielder's choice. But the Tornado bats exploded in the bottom half for eight runs, batting around, and knocking the Cardinals back on their heels.
Riffe showed the Tornado speed on the basepaths reaching on an error, stealing second and third, then scoring the first run on Fristoe's single. Will Thompson and Mitchell Crouch each knocked in a pair with singles. Riffe got his second at-bat for the inning and rifled a double to left, plating two more runs and scoring the eighth run on Josh Lang's single.
Justin West got the fireworks going with a 3-run shot in the third, starting another bat-around inning for the Tornado. Fristoe added two more runs with a triple to extend the lead to 14-1.
The Cardinals bounced back with three in the fourth frame and two more in the fifth, but the Tornado put the game away with two runs in the bottom half.
