The Mayfield Lady Cardinals fell in their home opener 45-36 to the Murray Lady Tigers on Monday night at Mayfield High School.
The Lady Cardinals struggled throughout the game to match up with the Lady Tigers' size, losing the rebounding battle 30-21. Murray's senior forward, Calli Carver, had 23 points, seven rebounds and a 3-pointer in the victory.
With Mayfield's rebounding struggles came trouble with scoring in the paint, as most of the Cardinal offense came from beyond the arc or at the free throw line.
In the first quarter, Mayfield controlled Murray's biggest weapons in Carver and Angela Gierhart, coming back from down 7-2 early to tie things at 9-all at the end of one quarter.
Carver scored 11 of her points in the second quarter, however, to give the Lady Tigers a 22-13 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Lady Cardinals managed to get shooting guard Kyler Henson going offensively but failed to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard, surrendering four of Murray's five 3-point baskets in the third quarter alone.
Following the Lady Cardinal loss, Mayfield head coach Brad Nanney was proud of his team for battling back against the Lady Tigers.
"I'm pretty happy with how it went considering it's the first game," Nanney said. "That's a tough opponent, Murray is still a good basketball team and we knew that going in. We knew we'd have to fight and scrap and I'm proud of our team in the second half for not laying down when the lead got to 10 or 12. They fought back and cut it down to five, but that's a team we're going to have to beat."

Whitaker, Duffy push Murray over UHA
The Murray Tigers got 31 points from Grant Whitaker and 20 rebounds Darius Duffy en route to an 89-77 win over University Heights Academy in Monday's season opener at Taylor Gymnasium.
Murray got off to a fast start and led 30-11 after the first with Whitaker pouring in 14 points in the frame.
The Tigers extended their lead in the second to 53-30 at the break and looked as if they had the game in hand but the Blazers had other ideas.
UHA's KJ Crump had a game-high 36 points, including 16 in the third quarter to help cut the deficit to seven points, but that's as close as UHA would get in the contest.
Murray was outscored 27-13 in the third quarter and 23-20 in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers' big first half was enough to give them their first victory of the season.
The Tigers had four players in double figures as they were paced by Whitaker's big day. Trey Boggess (14) Charqwan McCallister (14) and Gabe Taylor (13) also finished in double digits.
