MAYFIELD -- Survive and advance was the theme at Bill Hale Soccer Field on Monday night as the boys' Second District Tournament kicked off with a dramatic Mayfield Cardinal 1-0 victory over Calloway County in the play-in game.
The Cardinals came up empty early on two pivotal scoring chances as Alberto Arellano and Antonio Perez each missed open shots at the Laker goalkeeper.
Roughly five minutes after their second missed opportunity, Cardinal midfielder Cristian Leon came through, scoring on a difficult shot attempt and giving Mayfield an oh-so important 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
Following the half, Calloway County copied the Cardinals first half mistakes, failing to complete easy looks on scoring opportunities, keeping the score 1-0 Mayfield.
In the final 20 minutes of action the game entered a free-for-all with physicality and emotions increasing as the clock ticked on.
A crucial no-call on a play near the box caused panic to set in for the Lakers as stoppage time was their only hope.
Two more scoring chances saw the Lakers come up short as the Cardinals finished off the 1-0 win with a close save by goalkeeper Diego Juarez just before the final whistle sounded.
Following the win, head coach Luis Fabian said he was very happy for his team.
"Calloway is a tough team, but tonight, their problem was not finishing," Fabian said. "My guys defended well and may have missed out on some chances to take a larger lead but we also couldn't finish. In the end one goal is all it takes, whoever puts the ball in the net is the team that will advance. Tomorrow night will be a different challenge for us but right now, I'm really happy."
With their win, the Cardinals advance to Tuesday night's semi-final match against the number one seeded Marshall County Marshals. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bill Hale Soccer Field.

Lady Cardinals' season comes to an end
The Mayfield Lady Cardinals' 2019 season came to an end on Monday night as they fell 10-0 to the Murray Lady Tigers in one half of play.
The Lady Cardinals came out sluggish against Murray, allowing goal after goal in a match they did not look prepared to play.
With their loss, Mayfield finishes the season 2-17 overall and 0-9 in district play.
Through the first 18 minutes of action, the Lady Tigers scored five goals with Angela Gierhart leading the charge with two of her own.
In the next 22 minutes, Murray continued to unload shots on goal with Gierhart earning a hat trick on the final goal of the day, securing the Lady Tigers' 10-0 victory.
Murray shared the wealth with seven different players scoring on the day.
The Lady Tigers advance to Tuesday night's semi final game against the number on seed Marshall County Lady Marshals. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
