Mayfield senior wide receiver Daniel Coles (2) catches a Zane Cartwright pass across the middle for a huge gain. Coles hauled in four catches for 55 yards in the Cardinals’ 42-28 win.

Another year, another Mayfield victory.

The Mayfield Cardinals took care of business for the 16th year in a row on Friday night, taking down the Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado 42-28 at McRight Field.

Cardinals senior running back Kylan Galbreath put together another loaded stat sheet against Tilghman, rushing for 165 yards on 29 carries with three touchdowns.

At first glance, it appeared the Cardinals would be chasing Tilghman all night as the Blue Tornado opened up the game with a 41-yard touchdown strike from freshman quarterback Jack James to senior wide receiver Brian Thomas.

Facing a 7-0 deficit early, the Cardinals offense went right to work, using a 15-yard rushing touchdown from Galbreath to tie the game at 7-all.

Following a Tilghman three and out, Mayfield took its first lead of the game thanks to a three yard rushing touchdown from freshman quarterback Brajone Dabney.

With a 14-7 lead and momentum on their side, the Cardinals coughed up a huge turnover as sophomore quarterback Zane Cartwright was picked off by Tilghman’s Darionte Ragsdale who took the interception 32 yards for the touchdown.

Knotted at 14-all, Mayfield struck back with another rushing touchdown as Galbreath punched in his second of the night to put the Cardinals back in the lead, 21-14.

A James to Thomas three yard score and a rushing touchdown from Mayfield senior running back Jutarious Starks sent the game to halftime with the Cardinals leading 28-21.

Out of the break, Mayfield continued to apply pressure on both sides of the ball.

At the end of the third quarter, Starks bulldozed his way back into the end zone for his second rushing TD of the night, putting Mayfield ahead 35-21.

Following back-to-back three and outs from each team, Dabney came through in the clutch on defense, picking off James to set up the dagger as Galbreath scored his third rushing TD of the night.

Tilghman junior running back LeBran McMullen would add a one-yard score midway through the fourth but it wouldn’t be enough as the Cardinals ran out the clock to secure the 42-28 victory.

Following the Cardinals’ 16th consecutive win over the Blue Tornado, Mayfield head coach Joe Morris praised his team’s fight.

“We felt like we controlled the game,” Morris said. “They had trouble stopping Kylan and our offensive line, hats off to those guys. We had two big turnovers down there and they took advantage of it but our defense played pretty dadgum good tonight.”

Mayfield will return home next week as it hosts McCracken County at 7 p.m. at CFSB War Memorial Stadium.
