ARLINGTON -- Mary Helen Hocker, 98, of Arlington, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2019, at Clinton -- Hickman County ICF.
Mary Helen was born in McNeill, Mississippi, on September 13, 1920, to the late Robert Alexander and Daisy Terry Parrish. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Arlington First Baptist Church. Mary Helen devoted her life to working with children, in both her career and her faith. She spent countless hours helping children in the Arlington First Baptist Nursery learn the books of the Bible and preparing older children for regional Bible Drills. She also worked for over 25 years as a Speech Language Pathologist with the Easter Seals Center of Paducah.
Mary Helen moved to the Arlington area in 1941 after she married her husband of 56 years, Robert P. Hocker Jr. She was well educated, earning an associate's degree from Bethel College in Hopkinsville and her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in speech and hearing from Murray State University. Her MA was earned in 1972, graduating alongside her son, Robert, who earned his Bachelor's in business. She was also a very active member in the Arlington Women's Club.
Mary Helen is survived by her son, Robert P. Hocker III and wife, Cynthia of Arlington; daughter, Melinda Anne Craig and husband, Berry Craig III of Mayfield; three grandsons, Benjamin Hocker and wife, Brittanie of Nashville, Tennessee, Jonathan Hocker and wife, Shaina of Cadiz and Berry Craig IV of Louisville; and two great-granddaughters, Callie and Harlee Hocker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Hocker Jr.; her parents; one sister, Anne Catherine Markham and one brother, Robert Terry Parrish.
Funeral services for Mary Helen will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2019, at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Arlington, with Rev. David Sphinx officiating. Burial will follow at Arlington City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2019, at the funeral home.
