Trigg man faces assault charges after stabbing wife

A Trigg County man was arrested Saturday afternoon on assault charges after a physical altercation left his wife in the hospital.

Rico Cavanaugh, 43, is charged with first-degree assault, domestic violence.

Cavanaugh got into a confrontation with Melissa Cavanaugh, his wife, at their Charleston Drive home, stabbing her multiple times in the upper torso before being taken into custody by Trigg County Sheriff’s deputies, according to Sheriff Jason Barnes.

Melissa Cavanaugh, 48, was taken to Trigg County Hospital that day before being transferred to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, where she was in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon.
