Robert "Doc" McGaughey III, a retired Murray State University journalism professor, died Friday in Louisville.

Susan Guess, Murray State Board of Regents chairwoman, posted on social media that McGaughey died around 1:30 p.m. Friday at the University of Louisville Hospital. He was 76.

A 1965 Murray State graduate, McGaughey went on to teach journalism and served as chairman of the university's Department of Journalism and Mass Communications for more than 20 years. He earned a master's degree from Murray State and his doctorate from Ohio University.

He was also a Vietnam veteran and inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame in 2012.

McGaughey's funeral arrangements remained pending as of Saturday afternoon, according to J.H. Churchill Funeral Home in Murray.
