Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel at Mercy Health-Lourdes Hospital will host a special memorial service at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, to support and honor families who have experienced the loss of a pregnancy or death of an infant.
The memorial service is open to the community and takes place on Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, which serves to promote greater awareness, remembrance and support of the many individuals and families whose lives are impacted by the death of their children during pregnancy, at birth and in infancy.
The day also helps to promote research to help in the creation of programs, resources and services that support and assist survivors of baby loss and their families.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that stillbirth affects about 1% of all pregnancies and each year, about 24,000 babies are stillborn in the United States. That is about the same number of babies that die during the first year of life. As many as 15% of pregnancies end in miscarriage.
