The Marshall County Relay for Life cancer fundraising and awareness event will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Briensburg Baptist Church at 891 Briensburg Road on Ky. 58.
The Marshall County event will close out the 2019 Relay for Life season in western Kentucky. Calloway County opened the season on April 27, followed by Lyon County (May 31), Carlisle and Hickman counties (June 1), Graves County (June 1), Crittenden County (June 7) and McCracken and Ballard counties (June 8).
The Marshall County event will begin with a survivors' dinner at 5 p.m., with Relay for Life events starting at 6 p.m. The survivors' dinner is for cancer survivors and their caretakers or families, and is not open to the public.
Relay for Life is a fundraising event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. People work in teams to raise funds to help with cancer treatment, research and support through several means, like bake sales, car washes and other creative ideas.
The next local fundraising event for the American Cancer Society will be the fourth annual Celebrity Waiter, to be held Aug. 17 at the Knights of Columbus Hall on U.S. 45.
As the name implies, several local notables have volunteered to wait tables throughout the night. The waiter who raises the most funds is declared the winner of the event. This year's waiter roster is almost completed.
