A Florida man who was in a Caldwell County jail on DUI and traffic charges was charged Saturday in connection to a homicide in Colorado.

State police said Trooper TJ Williams was patrolling a portion of Interstate 24 in Lyon County on Friday when he stopped a vehicle for alleged traffic violations. The stop resulted in the arrest of John Horton, 31, of Jacksonville, Florida. Horton was booked into the Caldwell County Detention Center.

On Saturday, Kentucky State Police Post 1 received a notification from the FBI’s NCIC database stating that Horton was wanted for murder by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado. A Kentucky State Police investigator contacted authorities in Colorado and learned that Horton had been entered into the database earlier Saturday.

Kentucky State Police detectives went to the Caldwell County jail and served Horton with an arrest warrant for murder. He remained in the jail Saturday.

Authorities with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office were making arrangements to travel to Post 1 in the coming days in an effort to further their investigation, state police said.
