LOUISVILLE -- There are a lot of things to love about Louisville. Cheap international flights aren't one of them.
Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is one of the worst airports to get deals for international flights, according to a new list from Scott's Cheap Flights, an email subscription service that sends out cheap flight alerts. The list, which ranks the number of good deals the service found for airports in metropolitan areas that have at least 1 million people, has the the Derby City's main airport as the seventh worst.
Scott Keyes, founder and CEO of the service, said the Louisville airport is on this list because it is smaller, and less people fly in and out of Louisville in general.
"Those are the types of factors that help drive competition and route frequency for airlines," Keyes said. "And when there are more seats available, flights may be cheaper."
An illustration of this point: The best airport for cheap international flights, John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, is fairly large and has many people flying in and out, meaning more airlines stop there at a greater frequency. Whereas the cheapest flight in the past 12 months from Louisville to Amsterdam was $455 round trip, that same flight was $320 out of New York.
Keyes said that customers need to "be as flexible as possible" in order to get cheap flight deals. Rather than deciding where to go and then trying to purchase their tickets, Keyes suggests customers look for cheap flights from Louisville and make their travel destination decision from there.
"You have to make (deals) a priority," he said. "They're not just going to happen on their own."
