CLAY CITY -- Kentucky State Police said an off-duty deputy has shot and killed a driver who had escaped authorities during an earlier chase.

Trooper Scott Ferrell told WKYT-TV that Powell County deputies were searching for the vehicle involved in the chase Tuesday night when the off-duty deputy found it outside Clay City. He said the deputy approached the driver, who then attempted to disarm the deputy.

He said the deputy shot the driver in the ensuing struggle. Authorities didn't immediately release the identities of those involved.
