MAYFIELD — You might say Luke Guhy is like a teenage Superman — in a letter jacket, and a marching band uniform, and an academic team polo and a space suit. Well, not yet.

The 17-year-old senior is involved in almost everything Mayfield High School has to offer — football, basketball, baseball, band, science club and foreign language club, to name a few — and excels at all of it.

“He truly is the Renaissance man of MHS,” said Kathy O’Nan, social studies department chairwoman. A starting quarterback who removes his shoulder pads to perform a marimba solo in the band’s half-time show is a rarity, but that is Luke Guhy.

“He will be a valedictorian of his class after maintaining a 4.0 (grade-point average) while enrolled primarily in Advanced Placement courses in these past two years.”

Because Guhy has proven he can juggle numerous activities and still maintain a perfect GPA — not to mention perfect attendance throughout high school — he has earned the title of Teen of the Week.

Guhy, son of Chris and Mitzi Guhy, is the Murray State University Teen of the Week. Each Monday, the Sun features a different MSU Teen of the Week selected from nominees submitted by high school guidance counselors throughout western Kentucky and southern Illinois. In May, a Teen of the Year will be chosen from the weekly winners, earning a $5,000 scholarship to Murray State. Teen of the Week is part of the Sun’s Newspapers in Education program.

Guhy was selected as a National Merit semifinalist and was accepted into the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program. Guhy spent five weeks over the summer at Bellarmine University in Louisville studying astronomy with other GSP students. Guhy said he’s always been interested in engineering, astronomy, science and mathematics.

Guhy plans to attend J.B. Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville in the fall of 2011. He said he’s considering a major in mechanical engineering. Guhy hopes to pursue aerospace engineering after college graduation. Guhy said he’s spoken with several students who are currently enrolled in Speed School, a very intensive and well-respected program, and thinks performing a balancing act between academics and extracurricular activities throughout high school will aid in adjusting to college life.

Guhy also got a head start by taking a college calculus class at Murray State this semester.

Guhy’s teachers are confident that his skills will propel him to success.

Junior English teacher Kara Dowdy said, “Luke performs above and beyond the level in which he is expected in various roles for his school and community ... Overall, Luke is quite honestly the most talented young man in his class with regards to both academics and athletics.”
