As sickness and winter weather keep many people from venturing away from home, the Murray-Calloway County Hospital’s Blood Donor Center announced a critical need for all types of blood.

Area residents are given the opportunity to donate blood by attending an upcoming blood drive in the community, or by making an appointment at the Blood Donor Center, located on the first floor of the North Tower at the hospital. All types of blood are needed, but especially O-negative, A-negative and A-positive blood, at this time.

The constant supply of blood provided locally to the center gives the gift of life to many people, and takes less than an hour to complete. The MCCH Blood Donor Center is one of only two hospital-based donor centers in Kentucky, which means the blood drawn from the Murray area stays in the area.

“The need for blood is ongoing, and at this time, we are in need of blood,” said Beth Wiggins, Blood Donor Center coordinator. “Anyone who can take time of their busy schedule to attend one of the community blood drives, or make an appointment at the donor center, is greatly appreciated. Spread the word to friends and family, every single donation made helps us provide the best patient care and also save lives.”

A blood donor must be at least 18 years of age (or 16-17 with parental consent), be in good health, must weigh at least 110 pounds, and pass the brief physical and health history exams given prior to donation.

The need for blood donors is always needed, and if you are unable to stop by or make an appointment at the Donor Center, the next blood drive in the community will be Tuesday, Jan. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Paschall Truck Line in Murray.
