Red Cross upgrades to emergency need

Only two weeks after American Red Cross officials upgraded their blood donation need to urgent, the region enters into an emergency shortage.

Regina Raccuglia, communications manager for the Red Cross Tennessee Valley Blood Services Region, reported there were nearly 50,000 fewer blood donations than expected for the month of June. The  shortfall leave the Red Cross with half the readily available blood products on hand than this time last year.

While all blood types are needed, centers especially need blood types O (positive and negative), B and A negative, in order to meet patient demand through the summer.

People can donate blood in Paducah, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., July 11-12 at the Robert Cherry Civic Center, or First Christian Church 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., July 2; and Benton Church of Christ, 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday.
