Shirley Trevathan passed away peacefully on Friday, October 11, 2013, at the age of 94.
She is survived by her son Bob and daughter-in-law Nancy; daughter Susan and son-in-law Rod Frazier; son Dave and daughter-in-law Marty; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Trevathan, and brothers Charles and George Welch.
Shirley was born on May 17, 1919 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Frank and Goldie Welch. She grew up during the “Great Depression” in St. Louis but later was able to move to Paducah, Ky., where Frank found a job with the Illinois Central Railroad. She attended Paducah Tilghman High School and later met and married Robert on May 30, 1942.
Shirley worked for the telephone company as a “switchboard” operator while Robert was at sea with the Merchant Marines during World War II. Bob was born in Paducah in 1944. They moved to Los Angeles and finally settled in Torrance, Calif., where Susan was born in 1953 and Dave in 1959. The family lived in Thousand Oaks, California. in the ’70s and ’80s until returning to Paducah when Robert retired in 1985. Robert passed away in 1990.
Shirley regularly attended East Baptist Church, usually with Martha Trevathan, until moving to Delta, Ohio, in 2001 where she lived with Susan and Rod. In her last year, Shirley lived in Germantown, Tenn., under the compassionate care of Marty and Dave.
We will honor the memory of Shirley Louise Trevathan at East Baptist Church, 2985 Old Husbands Road, Paducah, KY 42003 at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2013.
