LA CENTER — William Stephen “Steve” Sandage, age 61, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013, at 3:30 p.m. at his home surrounded by his family and friends after a seven-year battle with esophageal cancer.
He was born in Harrisburg, Ill., but grew up in Cairo after his father, an Illinois State Trooper, was transferred to the Cairo Post. Having worked on the river since the age of 17, Steve was a career river boat pilot for over 40 years and worked up and down almost all of the inland waterways for various companies. He currently worked for Ingram Barge Lines aboard the M/V John M. Donnelly with a crew that he dearly respected and loved.
Steve is survived by his wife of 34 years, Linda Poole Sandage; two daughters, Stephanie Sandage Buchanon and husband Matt of Grand Rivers, Ky., and Jennifer Sandage Franklin and husband Chance of Jackson, Mo.; one sister, Kenya Davis and husband Frankie of Wickliffe, Ky.; and one brother, Brad Sandage of Milton, Fla. He is also survived by his aunt and uncle, LaDonna and Don Hughes of Fruitport, Mich., and his aunt Thelma “Shorty” Roper of Carrier Mills, Ill., along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Donald Sandage, and his mother, Charlene “Chicken” Sandage.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Morrow Funeral Chapel in LaCenter, Ky., with Greg Graves, Kelley Ray and Rev. Glen Crowe officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery at Blandville, Ky.
Visitation will be Tuesday, October 1, 2013, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Morrow Funeral Chapel in LaCenter.
The family would like to express their thanks to St. Thomas Hospital and Dr. Kent Shih, his office staff, and his staff of nurses at Tennessee Oncology in Nashville, Tenn., for their loving care over the past seven years. They would also like to say thank you to Ingram Barge Lines for honoring Steve’s legacy on the river by having all their boats fly their flags at half-mast.
