Robert Boyce Mitchell, 91, of Paducah, passed away at his home Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at 12:25 a.m.
Robert was born in Burna, Ky., September 7, 1922, to George and Mable (Riddle) Mitchell. He graduated from Hampton High School in 1942. He was a Corporal in the United States Air Force serving overseas in England, Germany and France during World War II. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Smithland and retired from the Kentucky Department of Transportation in 1987. He was the first supervisor for the Whitehaven Welcome Center in Paducah and worked diligently to make the center a place that would reflect the beauty that the city of Paducah offered to those that would pass through on their many journeys. He was a dedicated volunteer for 24 years for the American Red Cross, traveling countless miles to collect blood donations for those in need. He also gave his time for the past two years to Lourdes hospital as a volunteer.
He served as song leader at Old Salem Baptist Church and Central Baptist Church of Burna. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Paducah. He was recognized as a Duke of Paducah in both 1986 and 1989 and named a Kentucky Colonel in 1987. He also had a great love of trees and loved the process of grafting fruit trees in his own yard. He traveled the world with his wife Mina, was a Christian man that was dedicated to his family and his faith and lived a full, happy life.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mina Lou (Dickerson) Mitchell of Paducah; his daughters, Debbie Sims and Catherine Wright and husband Jim of Paducah; his son, Ronald B. Mitchell of Nashville, Tenn.; his sister, Mary Jean Ramage of Hampton; a brother-in-law, Bobby Dickerson of Marion; his grandchildren, Melanie (Sims) Jarvis and husband Tony, Adam Sims and wife Brittany, Jamie (Riggin) Tucker and husband Chris, David Riggin and Katie Riggin; and his great-grandchildren, Madison and Reed Jarvis, Caitlyn, Emma and Haddie Tucker, Aiden and Owen Mitchell Sims.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mable (Riddle) Mitchell; a brother, Clinton Mitchell; and a sister, Ann Threlkeld.
Friends may call Wednesday, September 25, 2013, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Milner and Orr of Paducah Funeral Home. Funeral services conducted by the Reverend Jim Ewing, the Rev. Tommy Tucker, the Rev. Charles Moore and the Reverend Jim Wright will be 11 a.m. Thursday, September 26, 2013, at Milner and Orr of Paducah with graveside services being held at Old Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Salem.
