Burke Benson Terrell, 76, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, August 17, 2013.
Burke graduated from Augusta Tilghman High School in 1955, where he was co-captain of the football team his last two years of high school. He later graduated from the University of Kentucky, College of Law in 1961. After serving two years in the JAG Corps, Burke returned to Paducah to practice law with the law firm founded by his father. In the last few years of his practice Burke devoted himself to representing disadvantaged children in family court; while often a thankless job, it is one Burke relished because of his great love for children. He was a member of the Kentucky Bar Association for 50 years before suffering a stroke two years ago, which forced his retirement.
Burke was a member of First Presbyterian Church for many years and sang in the church choir for 63 of those years. He loved singing and sang often with the Paducah Symphony Chorus and Community Chorus (and everywhere else), for many years.
Burke was preceded in death by one son, Clay Terrell. His parents were Adrian and Elizabeth Terrell.
Burke is survived by his wife of 22 years, Linda H. Terrell; his daughters, Laura (Thomas) Hahn, of Columbus, Indiana, and Lynn (Jimmy) Humpheries of Hillsboro, Ky.; his stepchildren, Nancy Hopson Maher, of Washington, D.C., and Grant (Crystal) Hopson, of Priceville, Ala.; his grandchildren, Sarah, Will and Stuart Hahn, all of Columbus, and Melanie Humpheries, of Hillsboro; and his loving Golden Retriever, Nikki. He is also survived by a sister, Carolyn (Francois) Pingon, of Medford Lakes, N.J.; a brother, Bruce (Noel) Terrell of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews, including four beloved stepnieces, Julie Colvis, Dawn Turner, and Maya and Hope Osborne, all of Paducah. Burke’s loss will leave an enormous void in the hearts of all those who loved him.
Funeral services to celebrate Burke’s life will held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Lynn Shurley officiating.
Visitation will be at the church between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. the morning before the funeral. Burial will follow in the North Ballard Church Cemetery.
The family asks that donations be made to Childwatch Children’s Advocacy Center, 1118 Jefferson St., Paducah, KY 42001 in lieu of flowers.
Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah is in charge of arrangements.
