MURRAY — Mrs. Mary Miller Ellis Lawson, 80, of Murray, Ky., passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, August 8, 2013.
Mrs. Lawson was born April 21, 1933, to the late Shannon and Viva Ellis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Ted (Teddy Bear) Lawson, to whom she was married July 4, 1954, and her only sibling, Elizabeth Jo Reeder, of Cleveland, Tenn.
An honor graduate of Kirksey High School, she earned both her Bachelor of Science Degree and Master’s Degree from Murray State University. She was a Home Economics teacher at Reidland High School commuting daily for over twenty years, and then served as the Kentucky State Supervisor of Home Economics traveling throughout the state while based in Frankfort, Ky. She retired in 1993 from Western Kentucky Vocational Technical School as a Consumer and Family Life Skills Instructor. She continued to substitute teach in both the city and county schools,and never tired of her love of the classroom and the students.
A lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Murray, the Adam & Eve Sunday School class and the “Mature Adults Growing in Christ Group.” She was also a member of the Theta Department of the Murray Women’s Club and the Omega Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
She loved teaching, camping, reading, playing Scrabble, the warm bright sunshine and always having her dessert first.
Survived and sadly missed by her three children, William Gregg Lawson, and canine companion Collette, also of Murray; Connie Hamilton and husband Greg of Owensboro, Ky., and Kevin Lawson and wife Cindy of Almo, Ky.; her only granddaughter and faithful camping and adventurer buddy, Mary Phoenix McCubbin of Bowling Green, Ky. Survived also by brother-in-law, Merritt Lawson of Puryear, Tenn., and several stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Joyful visitation will be held at Imes-Miller Funeral Home Friday, August 9, 2013, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with funeral at First Baptist Church Murray, Saturday, August 10, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation after 10:00 a.m.
Officiated by her friend in Christ — Pastor of Prayer and Care, Boyd Smith. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Erwin, Martin Paschall, Ramey Thompson, Joe Frank Dalton, Randy Lawson and Jerry Scarbrough.
