If you haven’t gotten the March Madness fever, there is still time.

The month of March marks the time for postseason men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments, including conference tournaments, the NCAA tournament and others like the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

The term “madness” is used to describe the sometimes crazy finishes when a team’s season is on the line, the heartache of ending a season or the joy of winning.

The highest goal for any college basketball team is to make it to the NCAA tournament, a 68-team tournament where the winner is crowned the national champion. If a team wins its conference tournament, it gets an automatic ticket to the NCAA tournament. If a team does not win its conference tournament, a committee decides if a team should make the NCAA tournament based on team records, statistics and other factors.

Teams find out who is in the NCAA tournament, who they play and when on Sunday, a day known as Selection Sunday. When the NCAA tournament field is announced, be sure and fill out a bracket and make your picks on who could win a national title.

Louisville is expected to be a lock for the NCAA tournament and a possible No. 1 seed. Western Kentucky will be in the NCAA tournament only if it defeated Florida International in a late Sun Belt Conference championship game Monday night (see results in the Sun’s sports section).

Kentucky is considered a “bubble team.” How the Wildcats play in the Southeastern Conference tournament this week will determine if it makes the NCAA tournament or NIT.

Murray State’s men’s basketball team, which went to the NCAA tournament last year and defeated Colorado State, lost Saturday to Belmont in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament. Belmont will play in the NCAA tournament, but Murray State must wait and see if it is invited to play in the NIT.

On the women’s side, Kentucky finished runner-up in the SEC tournament, but is still projected as a high seed in the women’s NCAA tournament. Louisville played late Monday in the Big East tournament semifinals, but is also expected to make the NCAA tournament regardless of how it finishes in the Big East.
