Oscar Talmage Sr.
METROPOLIS, Ill. — Oscar Talmage Sr., 86, of Metropolis, Ill., died on Christmas Eve at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah.
Mr. Talmage was born on January 13, 1926, in Paducah and lived there until he moved to Metropolis in 1956. Oscar graduated from Augusta Tilghman High School in 1944 and enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He was a B-29 Armorer-Gunner and advanced to Corporal. He then attended and graduated from Bowling Green Business College before serving as Paducah City Treasurer from 1951 to 1956. Oscar married Matilda Metzger in 1954. They were married for over 58 years. He was a partner and operated American Laundry & Cleaners of Metropolis before moving to Petter Supply Company in 1957. In 1968, Oscar became a traveling salesman in SE Missouri and Southern Illinois of industrial supplies for Hannan Supply Company of Paducah where he retired in 1989.
Oscar was a member of Temple Israel of Paducah, Lodge No. 1428 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of Metropolis, and the Metropolis Country Club. A devoted husband, he worked long hours to support his family and was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and reader and enjoyed watching sports. Oscar made many friends during his life.
Mr. Talmage is survived by his wife, “Tillie” Talmage; two daughters, Lisa Moore and husband Edmund of Burke, Va., and Rachel Ford and husband Rob of Paducah; two sons, Oscar Talmage Jr. of Cypress, Ill. and David Talmage and wife Susanne Chabara of Bahrain; 11 grandchildren, Hilary Ford, Jenna Talmage Eubanks and husband Blaine, Victoria Moore, Andrew Moore, Hailey Ford, Brenden Talmage, Sam Ruth III, Talmage Ruth, Alexander Talmage, Antony Talmage and Angelo Talmage; and one great-grandchild, Ellie Beth Eubanks.
Oscar was preceded in death by his parents, Howard A. and Henrietta K. Talmage of Paducah, and his daughter, Antoinette Louise Talmage Ruth, formerly of Metropolis.
A memorial service will be held at a yet to be determined date and time to accommodate out-of–the-country relatives. Interment will be at Temple Israel Cemetery of Paducah.
