Dale Melugin, 92, of Paducah, died at 12:46 p.m. Sunday at Western Baptist Hospital.

He was retired from Union Carbide/Martin Marietta, Construction Engineering Dept. after 34 years of service. He worked on the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, Tenn., prior to the end of World War II.

He was a graduate of Murray State University with a B.S. Degree, majoring in physics and mathematics. His teaching career consisted of being a civilian instructor at the U.S. Army Signal Corp School in Lexington, Ky., teaching a night school class in Electronics in Oak Ridge, Tenn., an instructor in physics and principles of flying at the U.S. Navy V-12 pre-flight school and veterans class in practical electricity at Murray State University in Murray, Ky.

His volunteer activities included Lourdes Hospice, Easter Seal Center, Board member of the American Cancer Society, Paducah-McCracken County Senior Citizens, Crime Stoppers and he was a graduate of the Paducah Police Department Citizen’s Police Academy. During the mid 1950s he was one of the organizers of the Paducah Outboard Boating Club where he served as the first commodore. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he served as deacon.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Delphine Elliott Melugin of Paducah; son, Roger (Marilyn) Melugin of Paducah; daughter, Laura (Robert) Herndon of Paducah; brother, Bob Melugin of Kingston, Okla.; three grandchildren, Reid Herndon, Colin Herndon, and Kristi (Chris) Tilley; and one great-grandchild, Brianna Tilley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Jewel Gingles Melugin.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Jamie Broome officiating. Burial will follow at Murray City Cemetery in Murray.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah and after 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2012, in Immanuel Baptist Church Parlor.
