CALVERT CITY — Cornelia Lee (Oakley) Lane Sparrow, age 87, of Calvert City, KY., died Thursday, November 22, 2012, at Calvert City Convalescent Center in Calvert City, KY.
Born June 14, 1925, in Vickers Creek Community in Trigg County, she graduated from Trigg County High School. Mrs. Sparrow taught at Ferguson Springs and Hematite Schools, one room schools, in Trigg County during and after World War II. She later moved to Evansville, Indiana, where she met and married Lee Lane. After the birth of their daughter, Rita, they moved back home to Trigg County where a second daughter, Karen, was born. In 1956, they moved to Calvert City where Mrs. Sparrow has since maintained her residence.
Mrs. Sparrow spent her career in banking at Calvert Bank and in the mid 1960s was the first employee hired at First Liberty Bank, which is now Regions Bank. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Calvert City where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School class, ABC club, and Senior Adult Choir. Over the many years at her church she taught Sunday School, worked in Bible School and with G.A.s, sang in the Sanctuary choir and helped with children’s choir. She was most recently an organizing and charter member of the Clarks River DAR, Marshall County.
Her survivors are daughter: Rita Fentress, Nashville, TN, daughter: Karen (Don) Howard, Calvert City, KY; grandchildren: Anne Fentress (Tim) Nichols, Nashville, TN, Ben Fentress, Aspen, Colorado, and Drew Postel, Lexington, KY; two great- grandchildren: Eliza and Will Nichols, Nashville, TN; sister: Mary Littlejohn, Palma, KY; several nieces and nephews; two stepgrandsons; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Mrs. Sparrow was predeceased by her first husband, Lee F. Lane, second husband, Eldee Sparrow, parents, Chester and Iva Nunn Oakley, three brothers, two sisters, and infant brother.
Arrangements are being handled by Collier Funeral Home, P.O. Box 492, Benton, KY.
Funeral service will be at Calvert City First Baptist Church at 11:00 AM Monday, November 26, 2012, Rev. Jim Ewing officiating. Interment will follow at Calvert City Cemetery, Calvert City, KY.
Visitation will be held at Calvert City First Baptist Church after 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 26, 2012, until the funeral hour.
Memorial contributions may be given to the First Baptist Church of Calvert City Building Fund, the American Cancer Society, or the Marshall County Humane Society.
