MELBER — Rex Benifield, 77, of Melber died at 10:43 p.m. Wednesday at Lourdes hospital.

Mr. Benifield was a farmer and retired from the state of Kentucky and the railroad. He also served as county road commissioner for several years and was named Democrat of the Year for 2012. He was a member of Melber Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Lawson Benifield; two daughters, Renee Mabry and Rhonda Benifield, both of Melber; one son, Bruce Benifield of Melber; two stepdaughters, Vikki Ellington of East Sparta, Ohio, and Valerie Stiles of Melber; one sister, Janice Ford of Boaz; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Debra Jean Benifield, and one grandson. His parents were Carl and Nellie Mae Cook Benifield.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Melber Church of Christ with David Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Kansas Cemetery.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home in Mayfield and after noon Sunday at the church.
