I love to travel. Sometimes I don’t love my destination, but driving or flying and the transition from one place to the next always fascinates me.

There is always a wealth of things I can write about, from my companion travelers to the frustrations of air travel. Then there are the facets of my journey that are unique to me, like my obsession with a front-pocket mainstay magazine that reads better than any gossip tabloid.

SkyMall has been around for as long as I remember. For those who have never had the pleasure of reading it, SkyMall is a magazine full of off-the-wall gadgets and products to solve problems that no one really has. To this day, I have never met a person who has purchased something out of it. I have, however, met people who make a career out of reading it.

The most current addition of SkyMall is the first I have read in nearly two years, and it didn’t disappoint. Just a glance at the magazine’s offerings is enough to make you scratch your head. There are ventilation systems for your running shoes that eliminate all smell-worthy bacteria, a Robocop-like head massager, portable saunas and pet drinking fountains.

The most expensive items include an electronic pill box that basically hands you your daily medications, an in-home grass plot for your pet to do his or her business on and a voice-activated replica of R2-D2.

You may ask why someone would need a portable, 120-foot inflatable movie screen, or why someone would pay close to $1,000 for a replica of a knight’s suit of armor. I can’t answer that. But the magazine has been in business for more than 20 years and has stayed afloat, so someone must be buying this stuff, right?

Somewhere out there, people must have a need for a deluxe bean bag chair or a giraffe-shaped tea kettle or a statue of a squirrel that imitates Auguste Ronin’s “The Thinker.” Personally, I will be using my disposable income to buy a gel seat for all  my long rides in the car.
