Here’s a critter you’ll actually enjoy seeing in your garden or planter. This cheerful, cheeky caterpillar is constructed out of foam practice golf balls, available at major retailers.

Materials

n 3 foam practice golf balls

n Serrated knife

n Colored craft foam

n 18-gauge wire

n 12-inch wooden skewer

n Permanent marker

Instructions

n 1. Slice two balls into thirds with a serrated knife (a parent’s job).

n 2. Cut about a dozen colored craft foam circles (for perfect circles, trace a cut ball).

n 3. For the antennae, clip two 2- to 3-inch pieces of 18-gauge wire and curl the ends.

n 4. Draw a face on a third ball with a permanent marker, let the ink dry for 15 minutes, and insert the antennae.

n 5. To assemble your bug, poke the craft foam circles and ball pieces in an alternating pattern on a 12-inch wooden skewer. Then top off your skewer with the ball and find a leafy home for your new friend.
