Just six months removed from suffering a broken foot, Maddye Rice's return to competitive sports went smoothly.
Rice, who broke her foot during the basketball season, scored two goals and added an assist as her McCracken County girls soccer team made the most of St. Mary 8-0 on the Lady Vikings' home field.
The Lady Mustang junior said she still isn't at 100 percent, but the star athlete was good enough to help lead the way on Monday.
"It felt amazing being out there tonight," she said. "I loved being out there with my teammates. It was a long six months being out."
She scored the first goal of the season for McCracken when Ashley Zimmerman found her for a score in the fourth minute. Zimmerman got in on the action just over 10 minutes later when she beat the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Four Lady Mustangs scored in the first half, with Elizabeth Noonan lofting one in the 22nd minute and 10 minutes later Shelby Turner getting a touch about 30 yards out, then spinning around her defender before scoring the goal.
McCracken coach Jeff Hill said he hopes the balanced scoring becomes a trend.
"Last year we had a lot of scoring from Maddye," he said. "We'll need more balance this year in case someone goes down."
Rice made it 5-0 in the 49th minute and four minutes later she fed Kye Miller for a goal to make it 6-0. Gemma Knight scored 13 minutes later when she cut to the outside and beat two defenders for the goal. Turner capped the scoring in the closing seconds when she headed it in off a pass from Kayla Tuttle.
"We worked really well as a team and I'm real excited for the season ahead," Rice said. "I think we can do really big things."
McCracken had 38 shots for the game, while the Lady Vikings could only muster one.
Up next for the Lady Mustangs is two games this weekend at the Daviess County Classic. St. Mary will be at Ballard Memorial tonight.
