By Mike Stunson mstunson@paducahsun.com

Ballard Memorial

Coach: Adam Solomon

2013 Record: 28-10

Returning Starters: Jade Tilford, Elizabeth Goodin, Kaylee Stover, Terah Lynn, Rebekah Hogancamp, Madison Trusha.

Players to Watch: McKenzie Scott, Paige Throgmorton, Tessa Blankenship, McKinsey Laster, Marybeth Myers, Hannah Gilbert, Adrianna Worley.

Outlook: Had it not been for McCracken County and before their arrival Lone Oak, Ballard would have been the class of the first region the last two years. With the bulk of the team returning, this year is as good a year as any for the Lady Bombers to rise into the top 25 rankings and potentially unseat McCracken.

Aug.: 18: at Marshall County, 22-23: TBA at Apollo Summer Slam, 26: at Murray, 28: at Fulton City. Sept.: 2: at Mayfield, 9: Marshall County, 11: at Community Christian, 13: TBA at All "A" Classic at Sportsplex, 16: Graves County, 18: Calloway County, 23: Community Christian, 26-27: TBA at Quad State Tournament at McCracken County, 30: at Hickman County. Oct.: 2: at Graves County, 14: University Heights Academy, 16: Hickman County.

Players to Watch: S/RH Chance Overbey, MH Ellyn Luther, DS/MH Tristan Mize.

Outlook: This may be the year for the Lady Lakers to post their first winning record since 2006 as they return their whole line from a year ago. "We have age and experience on our side so I believe we can do well this season. The girls put in a lot of time during preseason so I think that will show when it comes game time," coach Price said.

Aug.: 19: Fulton City, 21: at Hickman, 22-23: at Apollo Slam Fest, 26: Marshall. Sept.: 4: at Murray, 9: at Christian Fellowship, 16: Community Christian, 18: at Ballard Memorial, 25: Murray, 26-27: TBA at Quad State Tournament at McCracken County, 30: at Graves County. Oct.: 2: at Marshall County, 14: Christian Fellowship, 16: at Paducah Tilghman.

Carlisle County

Coach: Lisa Canler

2013 Record: 12-11

Returning Starters: OH Cheyenne Riley, OH Cassidy Canler, S Cailyn Bass, S Callie Deweese.

Other Players to Watch: Kaitlyn Draper, Kylie Martin, Abby Frazier, Mariah Powell, Payton Ballard, Abagail Lanier, Kaitlin Smith.

Outlook: With three of their returning starters being sophomores for the 2014 season, the Lady Comets look ready to make some noise in the first region after their first winning season since 2009 a year ago. The goal for Carlisle is simple: advance to the regional tournament. "Even though the Lady Comets are still relatively young, the team has a good mix of experienced players and new players committed to playing together as a team with renewed energy and effort," coach Canler said.

Christian Fellowship

Coach: Susan Burnett

2013 Record: 5-18

Returning Starters: Emily Nelson, Bekah Muller, Kailey Hicks, Carley Alexander, Karlee Phillips, Abbie Fletcher.

Players to Watch: Emily Nelson, Bekah Muller, Kailey Hicks, Carley Alexander, Karlee Phillips, Abbie Fletcher, Abigail Cima.

Outlook: After having no seniors last year, the Lady Eagles won't have any this year either as the team is led by three juniors. Led by team leader Emily Nelson, Christian Fellowship will head into the year with a chip on their shoulder ready to improve on a disappointing 2013 season. "I've seen a lot of improvement in them already, compared to last season. Also, with several younger girls moving up, we will have a little more depth and flexibility than we've had the last few years," coach Burnett said.

Aug.: 21: at Paducah Tilghman, 26: Community Christian, 28: at Marshall County. Sept.: 2: at Fulton County, 9: vs. Calloway County, 11: at University Heights, 13: All "A" Tournament at Sportsplex, 16: Marshall County, 23: Murray, 25: at Community Christian, 26-27: Quad-State Tournament at McCracken County, 30: University Heights. Coach: Rhet McMullen

2013 Record: 27-12

Returning Starters: N/A

Players to Watch: OH Maddie Brown, MH/S Eliza-Kate Carter, DS Alli Clinard, OH Shannon Ecklecamp, DS Lyndsey Meadows

Outlook: Following a year that brought them a 27-12 record and a trip to the All "A" State Tournament, the Lady Warriors will be back this year with the bulk of their team intact. Community Christian has two seniors listed on their roster - Shannon Ecklecamp and Alli Clinard. The Lady Warriors went 22-6 against region teams last year, but four of those losses came to region power McCracken County.

Aug.: 18: at Graves County, 19: Paducah Tilghman, 21: at St. Mary, 25: at Marshall County, 28: Murray. Sept.: 4: at McCracken, 8: at Paducah Tilghman, 9: at Murray, 11: Ballard Memorial, 18: Graves County, 23: at Ballard Memorial, 30: McCracken County. Oct.: 14: at Caldwell County, 16: Marshall County.

Fulton City

Coach: Chad Malray

2013 Record: 24-8

Returning Starters: S Autumn Tucker, OH/DS Taryn Crumble.

Players to Watch: S Susannah Whitesell, MH Markesha Dickerson, MH Mynia Hobbs, OH/MH Latavia Thomas, OH/DS Nekkesia Jackson, OH/DS Deja Brown, OH/DS Kaylee Hancock.

Outlook: With three straight first district championships and 20-win seasons, now comes the time for the Lady Bulldogs to make a serious run at the first region championship. It won't be easy as four starters graduated from last year's team, including two who went on to sign college scholarships.

Aug.: 18: Mayfield, 19: at Calloway County, 21: Carlisle County, 25: at Peabody, Tennessee, 28: Ballard Memorial. Sept.: 4: at Carlisle County, 8: at Hickman County, 9: at Fulton County, 11: at St. Mary, 13: TBA at All "A" Classic at Sportsplex, 15: at Joppa-Maple Grove, Illinois, 16: Fulton County, 18: at Murray, 22: Hickman County, 25: at Mayfield, 29: Paducah Tilghman, 30: St. Mary. Returning Starters: OH Amy Langford, MH Leah Rash, S Darcy Patrick, Samantha Ward, H Anna Gregory Grissom.

Players to Watch: H Anna Greggory Grissom, S Darcy Patrick, MH Leah Rash.

Outlook: With five seniors and many starters returning, the Lady Pilots will look for some improvement after losing their final 14 matches a year ago. While coach Dillon has experience at his disposal, he said he has liked what he has seen out of the younger girls. "I have already seen a lot of growth from my younger players, which is very encouraging. Overall I have a great group of girls and I am excited for the season to get in full swing."

Aug.: 19: St. Mary, 21: Mayfield, 26: Cairo. Sept.: 4: Union City, 9: Fulton City, 11: at Carlisle, 16: at Fulton City, 18: Hickman County, 22: at Union City, 23: Hickman County, 25: Carlisle County, 30: at Mayfield. Oct.: 14: at Paducah Tilghman, 16: at St. Mary.

Graves County

Coach: Lee Watson

Players to Watch: Tori Wiggins, Chaney Inman, Hailey Knisely, Jordan Hester, Morgan Elliott, Shelby Smith, Bailey Elder, Megan Wilson, Lindsay Medlin.

Outlook: Graduating two of their three leading hitters from a year ago, the Lady Eagles have moved former libero Chaney Inman to outside hitter to fill the void. Tori Wiggins is back and looks to improve on her school records in digs and serve percentage, and become first all-time in kills - a stat she currently ranks second all-time in.

Aug.: 18: Community Christian, 21: at Murray, 22-23: TBA at Apollo Summer Slam, 25: at Mayfield, 26: at Livingston Central, 28: at Crittenden County. Sept.: 2: at Hickman County, 5-6: TBA at Beech Invitational in Beech, Tennessee, 8: Carlisle County, 12-13: Thoroughbread Smash at Lafayette, 15: Paducah Tilghman, 16: at Ballard Memorial, 18: at Community Christian, 22: Mayfield, 23: at Marshall County, 26-27: TBA at Quad State Tournament at McCracken County, 30: Calloway County. Oct.: 2: Ballard Memorial, 14: at Fulton City.

Hickman County

Coach: Keith Lacewell

2013 Record: 15-13

Players to Watch: Kaylee Webb, Addie Bowman, Courtney Collier, Sarah Gardner, Kinsey Lock, Avery Cloar, Jasmine Myatt.

Outlook: After an up and down season in 2013, Hickman coach Keith Lacewell is hoping his team's experience pays dividends this season. There are five seniors set to return for the Lady Falcons, but it may be their slew of underclassmen - seven sophomores on the varsity roster  - that help Hickman turn the corner.

Aug.: 19: at Marshall County, 21: Calloway County, 25: Union City, Tennessee, 26: St. Mary, 28: Carlisle County. Sept.: 2: Graves County, 4: Mayfield, 6: TBA at All "A" Classic at Sportsplex, 8: Fulton City, 9: at Paducah Tilghman, 11: at Union City, Tennessee, 16: at Carlisle County, 18: Fulton County, 22: at Fulton City, 23: at Fulton County, 26-27: TBA at Quad State Tournament at McCracken County, 30: Ballard Memorial. Oct.: 13: at St. Mary, 14: at Mayfield, 16: at Ballard Memorial.

Marshall County

Coach: Dan Langhi

2013 Record: 15-17

Returning Starters: N/A

Players to Watch: N/A

Outlook: Only one senior graduated off last year's Lady Marshals team, with them being a trendy favorite to rise up in the region this year. Marshall has four seniors this year - DS Cassie Alberico, DS Maryanna Frazier, OH Ellie Lovett and DS Emma Willoughby - and six sophomores on their varsity roster.

Aug.: 18: Ballard Memorial, 19: Hickman County, 22-23: Apollo Summer Slam, 25: Community Christian, 26: at Calloway County, 28: Christian Fellowship. Sept.: 2: at Paducah Tilghman, 9: at Ballard Memorial, 11: at Murray, 15: at Livingston Central, 16: at Christian Fellowship, 18: Paducah Tilghman, 23: Graves County, 26-27: TBA at Quad State Tournament at McCracken County, 30: Murray. Coach: Vanessa Fisher

2013 Record: 4-13

Returning Starters: Lauren Hayden.

Players to Watch: Pamela Herrera, De'Keria Watson, Reina Morrison, Mariah Hurd.

Outlook: It could be a rebuilding year for the Lady Cardinals, who only have four upperclassmen and just one senior on the roster. "We are improving every day, but we do have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be," coach Fisher said.

Aug.: 18: at Fulton City, 19: at Carlisle County, 21: at Fulton County, 25: Graves County. Sept.: 2: Ballard Memorial, 4: at Hickman County, 8: at St. Mary, 13: TBA at All "A" Classic at Sportsplex, 18: Carlisle County, 22: at Graves County, 25: Fulton City, 30: Fulton County. Oct.: 14: Hickman County, 16: St. Mary.

McCracken County

Returning Starters: OH/MB Jasmine Bennett, S Hannah Parker, DS Ellie Spraggs, DS Madeline Wooten, OP Kaci Oetjen, OPP Haylee Rhinehart.

Players to Watch: OH/MB Jasmine Bennett, S Hannah Parker

Outlook: It'll be McCracken's region to lose as they return all but one starter from a year ago. The combination of Parker and Bennett is as good as any in western Kentucky, and they will look to lead the Lady Mustangs deep into state. McCracken begins the season ranked No. 9 in the state coaches poll.

Aug.: 22: TBA at KVCA Challenge at Louisville, 26: at Paducah Tilghman, 29: TBA at Bluegrass Invitational Tournament at Lexington. Sept.: 2: St. Mary, 4: Community Christian, 12: TBA at Crossroads Classic at Effingham, Illinois, 16: at St. Mary, 20: Mother of Mercy Invitational at Cincinnati, Ohio, 25: Paducah Tilghman, 26-27: TBA at Quad State Tournament, 30: at Community Christian. Oct.: 11: at Central Hardin, 18: Henry Clay.

Coach: Clare Boggess

2013 Record: 21-14

Returning Starters: OH/S Alexandra Page, L Aisha Fields, S/OP Madison Cohoon, MB/OH Sarah Fitzer, MB Maddie Waldrop.

Players to Watch: OH/S Alexandra Page, L Aisha Fields, S/OP Madison Cohoon, MB/OH Sarah Fitzer, MB Maddie Waldrop, OH Emily Coons.

Outlook: In a wide open District 4, the Lady Tigers will return as district champions, but will have plenty of competition to repeat in their title. Coach Boggess said her team has been working hard in practice and players are pushing one another to be the best they can be. "If we do our job and play to our potential, then we will set the tone to meet our district and regional goals," she said.

Aug.: 18: Carlisle County, 21: Graves County, 22-23: TBA at Apollo Summer Slam, 26: Ballard Memorial, 28: at Community Christian. Sept.: 4: Calloway County, 9: Community Christian, 11: Marshall County, 13: TBA at All "A" Classic at Sportsplex, 15: at Carlisle County, 16: at Paducah Tilghman, 18: Fulton City, 23: at Christian Fellowship, 25: at Calloway County, 26-27: TBA at Quad State Tournament at McCracken County, 30: at Marshall County. Oct.: 2: Christian Fellowship, 16: Caldwell County.

Paducah Tilghman

Coach: Carl Eligio

2013 Record: 3-14

Returning Starters: N/A

Players to Watch: N/A

Outlook: With all but one player returning to a Blue Tornado team that won just three years ago, coach Eligio will be looking for his team's experience to pay off this year in a competitive district. Zaria Brown is the only senior on the team, but Eligio will have five juniors at his disposal.

Aug.: 18: Livingston Central, 19: at Community Christian, 26: McCracken County, 28: at Massac County, Ill. Sept.: 2: Marshall County, 4: St. Mary, 8: Community Christian, 9: Hickman County, 15: at Graves County, 16: Murray, 18: at Marshall County, 22: at Livingston Central, 23: at St. Mary, 25: at McCracken County, 29: at Fulton City, 30: Carlisle County. 2013 Record: 2-19

Returning Starters: Kelly Black, Amanda Higgins and Olivia Ellison

Players to Watch: Olivia Griffen, Kelly Black, Amanda Higgins, Abby Vannatter, Karina Romero, Karlee Mannon, Olivia Ellison and Sara Quarles.

Outlook: With no upperclassmen on their roster, it may be tough to gauge the Lady Vikings this year. Coach Shaw said the addition of Griffen is a real plus, also saying his team has turned a corner with their relationships off the court. "The girls have made it their goal to be great teammates this year, and I have seen its effect on our practices and team functions."

Aug.: 19: at Fulton County, 21: Community Christian, 26: at Hickman County. Sept.: 2: at McCracken County, 4: at Paducah Tilghman, 8: Mayfield, 9: Carlisle County, 11: Fulton City, 16: McCracken County, 23: Paducah Tilghman, 30: at Fulton City. Oct.: 13: Hickman County, 14: Carlisle County, 16: at Mayfield.

Caldwell County

Coach: Sue Stone

2013 Record: 25-14

Returning Starters: L Isabella Meeks, DS Jessica Davis, OH Bailey Webster.

Other Players to Watch: OH Bailey Webster, DS Dasia Brandon, OH Laci Vinson, OH Alizia Sims, MH Alexis George, MH Abby Reece, S Katie VanHooser, OH/DS Bailey Oliver.

Outlook: A perennial favorite in Region 2 along with Henderson County, the Lady Tigers will return a lot of experience from a team that was the region runner-up last year. One big change for the Lady Tigers is that they are no longer eligible to compete in the All "A" Tournament as their school has exceeded the size limit for Class A. Nonetheless, the Lady Tigers appear to be up for the challenge in their hunt to win their first regional championship since 2011.

Aug.: 22-23: TBA at Apollo Summer Slam, 28: Madisonville-North Hopkins. Sept.: 9: at Hopkins County Central, 11: at Madisonville-North Hopkins, 12-13: Thoroughbred Smash at Lafayette, 16: University Heights, 18: Hopkins County Central, 23: Hopkinsville, 26-27: TBA at Quad State Tournament at Sportsplex, 30: at Henderson County. Livingston Central

Coach: Melissa Dean

2013 Record: 22-11

Returning Starters: Kenzie Dean, Tiffany Padon, Daira Barnes, Megan Stein.

Other Players to Watch: Megan Hughes, Skyler Downs.

Outlook: With nine seniors on the roster, Livingston will head into the year looking to jump into the upper echelon of Region 2. With Caldwell County's exit from the All "A," the Lady Cardinals will also be one of the teams to beat in the regional All "A" Tournament. "We have a really good chance at winning the All 'A' this year," coach Dean said.

Aug.: 18: at Paducah Tilghman, 23: Crittenden County, 26: Graves County, 28: at Webster County. Sept.: 4: University Heights, 6: at St. Mary, 9: at Trigg County, 11: Union County, 15: Marshall County, 16: Crittenden County, 18: St. Mary, 22: Paducah Tilghman, 23: at Union County, 25: Webster County, 26-27: Quad State Tournament at McCracken County, 30: Trigg County. Oct.: 2: at Crittenden County, 14: at Marshall County, 16: at Fulton City.

Trigg County

Coach: Julian Williams

2013 Record: 11-20

Returning Starters: N/A

Players to Watch: S/RS/DS Keleigh Mabry, MH Lauren Oliver, OH/L Kayla Tyler, MH Katie Walker, MH/OH Chloe Williamson, L Alexis Wright, MH/OS Hannah Wright.

Outlook: With a young team last year, the Lady Wildcats will have youth on their side again this season with a roster that includes just two seniors - Kayla Tucker and Hannah Wright. The thorn in Trigg's side last year proved to be Livingston, who beat the Lady Wildcats four times - but Trigg held tight with them in each match.

Aug.: 26: Fort Campbell. Sept.: 2: Crittenden County, 4: Hopkinsville, 8: at Todd County Central, 9: Livingston Central, 11: Webster County, 15: at Hopkinsville, 16: at Fort Campbell, 22: at Union County, 25: at Crittenden County, 29: Todd County Central, 30: at Livingston Central. Returning Starters: MH Emily Hoard, L Jordan Willmes, OH Christina Whitthorne, DS Rachel Chapman, S Josie Garduno, OPP Kristina Miller, MH Laken Hoyer, OPP Alexxus Thompson.

Other Players to Watch: OH Chelsea Duncan, S Mollie Fisher, S Ellie Weber.

Outlook: Coming off a regional championship season, the Lady Patriots return all but one starter from a year ago to set themselves up for a repeat. Massac is led by All-Conference and All-South seniors Emily Hoard and Jordan Willmes. "With an experienced, senior laden lineup, Massac is poised to defend their 2013 River-to-River conference title," coach Miller said.
