Seven Ski Nuts reach Southern regionals

EMINENCE - Seven members of the Kentucky Lake Ski Nuts qualified for regional competition with their performances at the Kentucky State Water Ski Championships, which took place on Stillwater Lake on Sunday.

Austin Collins of Murray won the Boys 2 division, with firsts in tricks and jumping plus a second in slalom. He also set a personal best with an 86-foot jump. Carl Marquess of Paducah won the Men 5 division, also with firsts in trick and jumping as well as second in slalom.

Joe Burkhead, also of Paducah, won Men 7 with a win in jumping, a second in tricks and a third in slalom. Owensboro's Pat Coomes took first in Men 6 with wins in tricks and jumping as well as second in slalom. Errol Bryant of Beechmont won slalom and tricks to claim first in the Men 8 division.

A pair of Paducah skiers rounded out the qualifying Ski Nuts. Jackson Hawes finished second in tricks and fourth in slalom for Boys 3, while Corey Hawes was first in jumping for Men 3.

These skiers advance to the Southern Regional Water Ski Championships on July 23-27 at Lymanland Lake in Tuscaloosa, Ala., with the U.S. Nationals scheduled for San Marcos, Texas, in mid-August.
