Tilghman takes two from Calloway County

By James D. Horne jhorne@paducahsun.com

MURRAY - The fourth quarter between Paducah Tilghman and Calloway County turned into a track meet, and it came down to who had the best kick at the end.

It turned out that the Blue Tornado had just enough muster and they toppled the Lakers 65-62 Tuesday night at Jeffrey Gymnasium.

"We really messed up before half and let the seven-point lead get away and fell behind by four," Tilghman coach Brad Stieg said. "But I'm really proud of the kids for coming back they way they did in the second half. We picked up the intensity and effort more in the second half, that was the main thing."

Brannon Warfield led the way for Tilghman with his 18 points, and Mikey Davis and Jessie Dunigan each contributed 12.

Calloway County's Parker Adams had the game-high of 19 points, and Skyler Hunter and Michael Arnett ended the night with 13 each.

Arnett tied the game at 40-all with his bucket to start the fourth with 7:50 left on the clock.

The lead changed hands seven times after that and was tied twice. The final lead change came when Tilghman's Devon Hart hit  one-of-two free-throws with 3:22 to play and upped the lead to 50-49 and off the second miss the ball was kicked out to Strayhorn, who drained a 3-pointer that made it 53-49 with 3:17 to go.

Warfield sank a three and gave the Blue Tornado a 56-49 margin with 2:50 on the clock. He did it again with 1:39 to go and made it 59-51.

Arnett got it down to 60-55 with his layup with 45.6 seconds left. And after a free throw by Tilghman's Davis, the Lakers' Adams made it the final with his layup with 28.8 ticks to go.

"We just had some trouble keeping up with them," Calloway County coach Terry Lane said. "They're so fast and can get at you. We had our chances, but just couldn't convert them."

Girls - Paducah Tilghman 56, Calloway County 47: The word for Paducah Tilghman and Calloway County Tuesday night was finish at Jeffrey Gymnasium.

And while the Lady Blue Tornado held off the Lady Lakers and won 56-47, Tilghman coach Roderick Thomas wanted to see a little bit better of a performance from his team. So did Calloway County coach Joseph Sivills.

"It was good to come out the way we did, but we didn't finish as well as we would have liked to," Thomas said. "But we came up with the win and played hard. Defensively, we still have a little work to do. I felt like we were trading baskets at one point. But give credit to our girls and give credit to Calloway County, because it was a hard-fought game tonight."

Paducah Tilghman (19-8) led the entire game, including jumping out to a 11-1 lead on Alex Kohler's 3-pointer with 6:26 left in first quarter.

Calloway County (13-12) got the margin down to 20-15 on Bailey Brown's three with 48.7 seconds left in the first.

The game stayed with Tilghman leading between five points and nine for most of it, until Tilghman opened up a 46-35 lead with 34.3 to go in the third on a Joya Smith layup.

Kohler made it an 11-point advantage again with her layup with 1:13 to play.

"We didn't finish," Sivills said. "We talked about rebounding at halftime and had some opportunities, but couldn't capitalize on the offense end. It's the same thing that happed against Marshall. We missed too many opportunities. We never really took the two to three minutes to get back in the game. We'd cut it to four, to six, get down nine, cut to six, get down 11. We just never really made a push."

Karlee Humphrey had 23 for Tilghman, Joya Smith scored 14, and Kohler added 10.

Calloway County was led by Summer Simmons's 26 points and Brown's 11.
