McKamey wins Springhurst tournament

Michelle McKamey, a freshman at McCracken County High School, is coming off two successful finishes at tennis tournaments over the holidays.

McKamey, 15, the three-time First Region girls tennis champion who lost in the semifinals of the 2013 state tournament, won the Springhurst New Year's Classic under 16 division in Louisville on Tuesday by beating Caroline Cox 7-6 (10-8) and 6-1.

The previous week, McKamey went 5-2 in the Winter Southern Closed in Knoxville, Tenn., which was held Dec. 26-30. McKamey lost her first match to the top-ranked player in the South, then won five of her last six matches.
