The gathering attracts hundreds of people each year who don't mind standing in line for 300 gallons of vanilla and pineapple-orange ice cream that church members have made. The church averages 70 to 100 people in attendance each Sunday. "It's all hand-cranked," church member Liz Logeman said. "The social has been going on we estimate close to 100 years. We're the only church left in the community that still has an ice cream social. People like the good food, and it's an annual social event. You see people you only see but once a year." The social will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at the church grounds at 5187 Old Marion Road in the Jefferson School community, eight miles north of Metropolis. The church also sells pork burgers, hamburgers, bratwurst, hot dogs, chicken salad, and homemade pies and cakes. Craft and yard sale items, baked goods, and vegetables and fruits will be sold at a country store. Local merchants donated paper goods, and Pork Peddler and Ryan's Steakhouse will donate cobblers. Donations benefit three local families whom church members nominated. "None of them are members of our church," Logeman said. "We help the community." The families are Rick Diles, a resident of Metropolis Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center; Jeff and Jennifer Korte, whose 6-year-old son was injured in a tractor accident; and Larry Brueggert, a cancer patient.
