Weekly classes aid people with mental illnesses

A free, weekly education program offers help to families and friends of people with serious mental illnesses.

Starting in August, the 12-week classes will focus on how families can support their ill relative while maintaining their own well-being.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness course teaches coping skills; listening and communicating techniques; problem solving; understanding mental disorders; self-care for family members; information about side effects; how to connect with support services, and advocacy.

Specifically, the course discusses major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder and borderline personality disorder.
