Heath, St. Mary to represent

First Region at All A state

The St. Mary baseball team beat Community Christian Academy 6-2 on Saturday to win the First Region All A Classic baseball tournament, advancing to play Glasgow, the Fourth Region winner, in a sectional contest. Heath, a two time All A Classic state champion, beat Murray High School 8-0 on Wednesday for the All A First Region softball championship. The Lady Pirates advance Saturday to play in the state tournament held in Owensboro.

The All A Classic sports state tournaments, sponsored by Touchstone Energy, are reserved for small schools that often aren’t always able to compete with the larger schools in the state, which can boast more students and resources which can benefit their athletic endeavors.

Regional teams win in NHL playoffs

Both the St. Louis Blues and the Nashville Predators will continue their Stanley Cup playoff dreams after winning their respective series this weekend. The Predators beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in Game 5 on Friday to win the series 4-1.

The Blues defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-1 on Saturday to close the series 4-1.

Denny Hamlin wins at Kansas

NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin won the Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., on Sunday, winning his second race of the season. Hamlin held of Martin Truex Jr., who finished in second, and Jimmie Johnson, who finished third. Hamlin got some help when the sun peeked on an unseasonably cool day, giving his tires some extra grip and with the warmth.
