Janet Miller, coordinator of the west Kentucky branch of Nashville Songwriters Association International, has been writing songs for 10 years. She is still searching for the one thing all people in the business are after, the one song that will make get her foot in the door.

“All it takes is one,” Miller said. “You have to accept the chance that your song may never get cut, but once you get one song on Nashville’s radar, the possibilities are endless. I work every day to make that happen.”

Miller and seven other aspiring songwriters will be on stage Saturday night at the Clemens Fine Arts Center as part of the NSAI showcase. The concert features writers just like Miller who have worked their whole lives to hear their songs on the radio.

“The show is unique in that there is potential in every song you hear,” Miller said. “Every song up that is played Saturday could be picked up by a huge act and be a number one hit. It’s all about networking and getting your stuff out there.”

Like Miller, Matt Sullivan has been working on and off on his music for 20 years. In the past five years, however, he has really hunkered down and started actively working with the NSAI to find a place for his songs.

“For me, the wheels are always turning,” Sullivan said. “I could get discouraged, but I am always finding new ideas and things that make amazing songs.”

The NSAI is the world’s largest not-for-profit songwriters trade association. They have more than 5,000 members nationwide and put on workshops to help with songwriting, provide critiques to writers, and help with networking. For Sullivan, even if the business is tough to break into, he plans to keep trying.

“One you start writing you can’t just lay it down and walk away,” Sullivan said. “This is about passion. You can’t just let it go.”
