Sherman H. Finke
METROPOLIS, Ill. — Sherman H. Finke, 80, of Crawfordsville, Ark., formerly of Metropolis, Ill., passed away at 5:08 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2013, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Metropolis, Ill. Rev. David Deem will officiate. Burial will follow in the St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Sherman was the owner operator of Sherman H. Finke Company, a contract drilling firm that operated in the Illinois Basin and Rocky Mountain states of Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, and New Mexico, and a mining equipment distributor for Nagaoka, Inc. of Osaka, Japan. Sherman and his son, Douglas are co-owners of a farm in Massac County, Ill.
He applied for and received an appointment from U.S. Sen. Everett Dirksen of Illinois to attend the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, but declined the offer to pursue other interests. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War serving in Europe with U.S. Army Combat Corp of Engineers. Sherman was a licensed pilot. Flying and helping others were his greatest pleasures.
Sherman was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, in Metropolis, Ill., and had been a former member.
Sherman is survived by one son, Douglas (Debbie); and one grandson, Eric of West Memphis, Ark.; one brother, Leonard (Pearl) Finke of Paducah, Ky.; four nephews; and one niece.
He is preceded in death by his parents, August and Marie (Foss) Finke.
Visitation will be held on Saturday evening, April 6, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home in Metropolis and on Sunday after 12:30 p.m. at the church.
