Dr. Shelton Owens, 87, of Paducah, formerly of Fulton, passed away at 2:52 p.m. at Baptist Health Paducah.
He was a member of Twelve Oaks Baptist Church in Paducah. Dr. Owens was a 1944 valedictorian of Brewers High School, where he played as a guard on the basketball team. The day after graduation, he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps 1st Marine Division serving in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war, Dr. Owens attended Murray State University and Northern School of Optometry of Chicago.
He was an optometrist for over 60 years starting his practice in Fulton in 1951 and in 1996 began working with his son at Eye Care Associates of Paducah.
He was also a member of Fulton Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge of Fulton. Dr. Owens was a dedicated UK Wildcat fan.
He is survived by his daughter, Shelia (Robert) Brown of Clinton; son, Dr. Mark (Theresa) Owens of Paducah; four grandchildren, Adrienne (Mark) Yeager of Paducah, Daniel (Mykala) Brown of Paducah, John (Angela) Owens of Lexington, and Emily Owens of Chicago; four great-grandsons, Benjamin and Samuel Yeager and Owen and Spencer Brown, all of Paducah.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Marcie Green Owens; and his parents, Guy and Norma Miller Owens.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, at Brown Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Aubert Rose, Rev. Louis Brinker, and Rev. Brandt Lyon officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Twelve Oaks Baptist Church in Paducah and after 11 a.m. Sunday at Brown Funeral Home in Clinton.
