KEVIL — Ruth McElya, age 92, went to be with her Lord and Savior at 9:34 a.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.
Ruth was a member of Newton Creek Baptist Church where she served her Lord and Savior. She volunteered for several years at HIS House Ministry in La Center. Ruth farmed fruit orchards for many years with her husband John D.
Ruth was a beautiful lady and a great encourager. She had a sincere, sweet spirit, loved everyone, and everyone loved her.
Ruth is survived by three sons, Gary McElya and his wife Monna of Kevil, Keith McElya of Newburgh, Indiana, and Danny McElya and his wife Jill of Murray; one brother, Bill Chumbler and his wife Betty of Valparaiso, Indiana; two sisters, Betty Colvin and her husband Paul of Milledgeville, Ga., and Lena Mae Thornton and her husband Elston of Athens, Alabama; six grandchildren, Stephanie Morehead and her husband Howie, Melissa McElya, Jennifer Linville and her husband Chris, Brian McElya, Brad McElya and his wife Jill, and Luke McElya; and several nieces; nephews; and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John D. McElya; her parents, Carl and Lillie Vasseur Chumbler; five brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, November 24, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Newton Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Carter officiating.
Interment will follow at Newton Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday Evening from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Morrow Funeral Chapel in La Center, and Saturday morning at Newton Creek Baptist Church from 9:00 a.m. until funeral time at 11:00 a.m.
