KEVIL — Robert Otis Lanier, age 87, passed away at 2:25 a.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Superior Care Home in Paducah.
He was born in Bandana, Ky., to Charles Robert “Doc” and Mable Throgmorton Lanier on May 1, 1926. He graduated from Bandana High School. He farmed and raised cattle with his father in Ingleside. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was awarded a Bronze Star for his service. In 1966, he was appointed Postmaster of Kevil by President Lyndon B. Johnson. He retired from the Postal Service in 1988. He and his wife, Joan, traveled all over the United States and abroad attending National and State Postmaster Conventions. He served on numerous boards and held many positions with the National and State Postmaster Leagues and was Kentucky State Postmaster of the Year during his service.
Robert’s passion was serving his church, his community, the American Legion Post #3, the Ballard County Fair Board, and the Gideons. He loved Kevil and Ballard County. He was a 65-year member of the American Legion Post #3 and served as treasurer for 47 years. He was a founding member and treasurer of the Ballard County Fair Board for 35 years. He loved entering his 1943 M Farmall Tractor in the Ballard County Fair Parade every year.
In the 1950s, Robert was ordained as a deacon at Bandana Baptist Church. He was a member of Kevil First Baptist Church and served as a deacon and Men’s Sunday School Teacher for 47 years. He was a Gideon and loved having prayer breakfast every Saturday morning at Bluegrass Restaurant with his Gideon friends..
He was married to Joan Turner Lanier for 53 years. He went dancing 2 or 3 times a week up until his recent illness.
He is survived by two daughters, Linda Seed and husband, Steve of Paducah, and Lisa Simmons and husband, Jeff of Franklin, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Wyatt and Luke Seed of Paducah, and Grace, Mabry, and Kate Simmons of Franklin, Tenn.; his brother, Donnie Lanier and wife, Judy of Paducah.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Turner Lanier; one son, Charles Mabry Lanier; his parents, Charles Robert and Mable Throgmorton Lanier; and his sister, Dorothy Christian Freeman.
Services for Robert Otis Lanier will be Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Morrow Funeral Chapel of Kevil with the Rev. Stuart Strickland and Rev. Jeff Simmons officiating.
Visitation will be Friday, May 10, 2013, from 5-8 p.m. at Morrow Funeral Chapel in Kevil. Visitation will also precede the funeral time on Saturday. Military rites will follow at Woodville Cemetery in Kevil.
