BARDWELL — Services for Ray Akers, 84, of Bardwell will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Milner & Orr Funeral Home in Bardwell with the Revs. Jimmy Stairs and Kevin Riley officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mr. Akers died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday at Western Baptist Hospital.

An Air Force veteran of World War II, he was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and had worked for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad as a telegraph operator. He had served on the Bardwell City Council and fire department and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5409 in Bardwell.

He is survived by two daughters, Lorri Ann Shehorn and Jan Deweese of Bardwell; a son, Tommy Burpo of Bardwell; a brother, Ronald Akers of Alabama; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Ann Harp Akers; two sons, Roger Dale and Ricky Akers; three sisters; and four brothers. His parents were Thomas Linsey and Annie Elizabeth Smith Akers.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 11 a.m. Friday.
