MAYFIELD — Former Mayfield resident and well-known Memphis performer Mary Shelton died in Pensacola, Florida, October 17, 2012.

After completing her studies at the University of Illinois, she and her late husband, William Edward (Bill) Shelton III, moved to Mayfield, his family home.

She started a live music and talk radio show, “At Home with Mary” broadcast on WNGO from their living room on Pryor Street, was active in community groups, and was organist of First United Methodist Church. When the family moved to Memphis in 1963, she was recruited to play the leading role of Mama Rose in Front Street Theatre’s production of “Gypsy” and later “Mame.”

In the 1970’s and ’80s she and her husband, by then a retired savings and loan/bank executive, were partners in The Shelton Company, Realtors. Mrs. Shelton was also active in the Memphis arts scene, serving on the boards of the Memphis Symphony, Opera Theatre, and the Arts Council, and was a founding member of the Brooks Decorative Arts Trust.

She is survived by three children, Cindy Hays (Mrs. Paul) of Washington, D.C., William Edward Shelton IV of Orange Beach, Ala., and Holly Snowden (Mrs. Donald) of Pensacola; three grandsons; and her brother, George Hadfield of Nashville.

Graveside services will take place at Maplewood Cemetery at noon Monday, October 29. Local arrangements are being made by Byrn Funeral Home.
