Joanne Jones Polk Brown, a native of Paducah, Ky., born February 2, 1921, died June 24, 2013, in Richmond, Ky. Daughter of Elwyn Berry and Ross Jones, she was married for 53 years to John Wright Polk Jr., and later in life married Col. David Brown.
Mrs. Brown is survived by four children: David Polk, John Polk III, Susan Polk Dickerson, Anne Polk Gray; her cousin, Marion Green Bolks; nephews, Jeff Hines and Richard Schell; and niece, Melissa Schell. Her grandchildren include: Adrian Harvey, Benton Polk, Joannah Dickerson, Katherine Polk Chandler, Laura Dickerson Sears, Jalaine Polk, John Polk IV, Caroline Gray and Noah Polk; and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Brown, a 1939 graduate of Augusta Tilghman High School, was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, Paducah, then of Good Shepherd in Lexington, Ky. She was a member of the Paducah Charity League, the Little Garden Club of Paducah, the library’s Kalosophic Club. She always read and was a popular pianist. An amateur botanist and a professional landscape designer, she was alive — and is alive — in the many gardens she created.
The family wants to thank the staff at McCready Manor and Telford Terrace (Richmond, Ky.) and Richmond Place in Lexington for their loving care.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Church at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to her church’s general fund in her name; that’s Grace Church, 820 Broadway, Paducah, KY 42001.
