“Now You See Me”
Charismatic magician Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) leads a team of talented illusionists called the Four Horsemen. Atlas and his comrades mesmerize audiences with a pair of magic shows that drain the bank accounts of the corrupt and funnel the money to audience members. A federal agent (Mark Ruffalo) and an Interpol detective (Mélanie Laurent) intend to rein in the Horsemen before their next caper, and they turn to Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman), a famous debunker, for help.
The buzz: The film relies on directorial sleight of hand to distract audiences from poorly developed characters and a scattered plot. But there’s still fun to be had along the way.
Length: 116 min.
Show times: 11:25 a.m., 2:05 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 10:15 p.m. at Cinemark.
Ellis and his friend Neckbone find a man named Mud hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud describes fantastic scenarios: he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. He says he plans to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper, who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him. It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true.
The buzz: Bolstered by a strong performance from Matthew McConaughey in the title role, Mud offers an engaging drama that manages to stay sweet without being sappy.
Length: 130 min.
Show times: 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday; 4, 7, and 9:30 p.m. Saturday; 4 and 7 p.m. Sunday at Maiden Alley Cinema.
