‘Mama’
On the day that their parents die, sisters Lilly and Victoria vanish in the woods, prompting a frantic search by their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain). Five years later the girls are found alive in a decaying cabin, and Lucas and Annabel welcome them into their home. But as Annabel tries to reintroduce the children to a normal life, she finds that someone — or something — still wants to tuck them in at night.
The buzz: “Mama” suffers from a contrived plot and an overabundance of special effects, but still offers quite a few suspenseful moments for those who prefer old-school scares to blood and guts.
Length: 100 min.
Show times: 11:55 a.m., 2:20 p.m. 4:45 p.m., 7:10 p.m., and 9:35 p.m. at Cinemark.
‘The Central Park Five’
In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers were arrested and charged with brutally attacking a female jogger in Central Park. News media swarmed the case, calling it “the crime of the century.” But the truth about what really happened didn’t become clear until after the five had spent years in prison for a crime they didn’t commit.
The buzz: The documentary paints a grim portrait of the criminal justice system. Its wrenching interviews with the accused men make it difficult — but worthwhile — to watch.
Length: 119 min.
Show times: 7 and 9:10 p.m. Friday, 4:30, 7 and 9:10 p.m. Saturday, and 2, 4:30 and 7 p.m. Sunday at Maiden Alley Cinema.
