“Brave”

Princess Merida is determined to not behave like a princess. Armed with a bow and arrow, she fights her way through Scottish highjinx to undo a curse that could ruin her kingdom.

The buzz: Pixar is billing this as the next big princess, but it has a lot to prove. While some of their latest movies build in adult themes to keep mommies and daddies happy, Brave is pure children’s entertainment. But Merida is the first princess to put the world solely on her shoulders, so it’s a step in the right direction.

  “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”

When Abraham Lincoln discovers that vampires are set to take over the world, he makes it his mission to eliminate them.

The buzz: Someone may look at the title and think it’s a lame attempt at humor, but this book was absolutely riveting. Putting it onto the big screen was no easy task, but director Timur Bekmambetov (who directed “Wanted) was up to the task. If you like movies that are both action-packed and surreal, you will love this one.

Showing at: Cinemark

Length: 105 minutes

“Bernie”

Bernie Teide is the town’s nicest and most caring resident, but when he befriends one of the most-hated older women in town everyone is confused. The woman turns up dead, and Bernie is charged with murder.

The buzz: Jack Black plays the role of Bernie to perfection, but Matthew McConaughey dons a gray hairpiece and takes the role of a Texas prosecutor to the hysterical extreme. It’s definitely worth seeing.

Playing at: Maiden Alley Cinema
