“J. Edgar”

There was going to come a time where one brave soul took on the role of J. Edgar Hoover. Fortunately for moviegoers, that time is now and that actor is Leonardo DiCaprio. In “J. Edgar,” DiCaprio plays the embattled creator of the FBI, who had controversy surrounding both his personal and professional lives. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the movie is helped along by a supporting cast that includes Josh Lucas and Armie Hammer.

The buzz: There is no doubt in my mind that the Eastwood/DiCaprio team will make this movie worth seeing. My questions arise with just how much of Hoover’s life is examined and how they present their findings. Either way, it is sure to be visiting the stage during awards season.

Showing at: Cinemark

Show Times: 12:40 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 6:50 p.m. and 9:55 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“Immortals”

The fight for the fate of the planet is the plot to countless movies, but “Immortals” attacks it a different way. Ancient warrior Theseus, played by Henry Cavill, is on a mission to avenge the death of his mother by killing King Hyperion, who has been waging war on villages all over the country. “Immortals” was produced by the same group who did “300,” and the cinematography and fight scenes show no mercy. The movie has a young cast, with the exception of Mickey Rourke, who plays Hyperion  — the villain to end all villains.

The buzz: The plot may get cheesy, but the movie guarantees not to bore. It may also be a candidate for date night. Men will enjoy the intense battles, while women won’t complain about seeing Cavill and his brethren run around shirtless. Also, this is the first chance America gets to see Cavill in a leading role before he takes on Superman in “Man of Steel,” which is slated for 2013.

“Jack & Jill”

Adam Sandler fans rejoice! In his new movie, the comedic actor plays two lead roles at once. In “Jack & Jill,” Sandler plays a man and his twin sister that must overcome their childhood hatred and misunderstandings to be together during the holidays. The movie includes the same cast that makes an appearance in every Sandler movie, but also brings in Katie Holmes, David Spade and Al Pacino. Yes, you heard me right.

The buzz: Even though I am sure that the movie has its ups and downs, I am afraid to say Sandler has struck out again. It’s hard enough to get viewers to the movies to see Sandler anymore, let alone when he is dressed as a woman. Pacino, however, is hilarious and can save any movie. Save your money for the DVD rental.

“Sarah’s Key”

Europe was filled with war crimes and horrific occurrences during WWII, but there were also magnificent stories of survival and will. In “Sarah’s Key,” Kristen Scott Thomas plays a journalist who investigates the notorious Vel’ d’Hiv Roundup in 1942. Her story unveils a young child, Sarah Starzinski, and shines a light on some of the conditions and treatment the Jewish people endured.

The buzz: Thomas is always good at these heart-wrenching roles, and “Sarah’s Key” is no different. This may be the most poignant movie hitting theaters in Paducah this weekend.
