MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Danny “Dan” Smith Duncan, 61, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at his home in Memphis, Tenn., after a long battle with cancer.

He grew up in Bardwell, Ky., and was a 1969 graduate of Carlisle County High School, where he played basketball. He studied accounting at Murray State University and was president of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. After college graduation, he worked in Memphis for Deloitte and Touche, LLP as a Certified Public Accountant and audit partner for 36 years, retiring in 2009. During his career, he was a frequent instructor for Deloitte’s regional and national continuing professional education programs on technical audit subjects and was a mentor to many young accountants.

Dan was a communicant of Church of the Holy Communion, Episcopal, where he was a member of the Vestry and Men’s Bible Study Group and a former junior warden, stewardship chairman, and member of the Endowment Committee. One of the highlights of his life was walking El Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage trail in France and Spain, with a small group of men in 2003. He recently served on the boards of the Church Health Center and the Mid-South Food Bank and had been an active volunteer in community organizations in Memphis for many years, serving in many leadership positions. Dan enjoyed nature and traveling, especially hiking and bicycling trips to scenic places in the U.S. and abroad, as well as fitness and yoga. He was an avid sports fan, following University of Kentucky basketball and the St. Louis Cardinals all of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyndell Mason Duncan and Thurston Smith Duncan of Bardwell, Ky.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ann Ellington Duncan of Memphis; and his brothers, Gary M. Duncan (Kelly) of Dothan, Ala., and Barry D. Duncan (Angie) of Dexter, Mo. He also leaves his aunt, Marguerite Summers of Cunningham, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, in Memphis.
