“Ruby Sparks”

Calvin (Paul Dano) is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing, as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby, who inspires him. When Calvin finds Ruby (Zoe Kazan) sitting on his couch about a week later, he is flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person.

The buzz: Although the premise isn’t new and the ending is too conventional for some, critics are calling “Ruby Sparks” a delight. The film gets most of its “spark” from Kazan. After being mostly a bit player in a handful of films, the 29-year-old actress shows she is more than capable of stepping into lead roles. She’s also not too bad at screen writing, either.

Length: 104 min.

Showtimes: 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. Friday; 4:30, 7, and 9:15 p.m. Saturday; 4:30 and 7 p.m. Sunday.
