VIENNA, Ill. — Claude Eugene Harper, 88, of Vienna died Monday, May 20, 2013, at Southgate Health Care Center in Metropolis.
Mr. Harper served as the Johnson County treasurer from 1970 until his retirement in 1992. He had formerly been a partner in U&H Food Center in Vienna from 1957-1970.
He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II. He had been a prisoner of war in Germany for the last five months of the war. Mr. Harper was a deacon emeritus of First Baptist Church in Vienna.
Survivors include his wife, Velma Herren Harper; two sons, Don Harper and Bill Harper; one daughter, Patti Harper; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Sherry Moore, Mike Herren, Randy Herren and Danny Herren; one brother, Verne Harper, and one sister, Rosalie Steinhour.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilda Parker Harper. His parents were Fred and Amy (Martin) Harper.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Burial will be in Reynoldsburg Cemetery near Tunnel Hill with military rites.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
